A Focus on Equity in Math Instruction

In an Edutopia article published today, my colleague Larisa Bukalov and I discuss how we use equity tasks, short activities based on student goals to make classes more inclusive and accessible.

Inspired by the work of Dr. Maria Akinyele, a leadership development expert who worked with our school’s equity team, we identified four key components of equity: rigor, diversity, identity, and justice.

We also devised a rubric to help us evaluate the amount of equity in each task and plan our units more effectively. The rubric, as well as sample equity tasks, is available on our website mathequitytask.com.
