This school year will be my busiest speaking schedule yet! Here is a list of my presentations, along with descriptions of each:
Using TESOL Strategies to Teach Math (New York State TESOL Virtual Conference, September 30, 2023): In this session, we will discuss specific language techniques to help K-12 students become more fluent in math. These strategies (which include annotating mathematical text, teaching pronunciation of symbols, and concept attainment). We will also discuss how these techniques make math instruction more equitable.
What Made You Say That? Promoting Mathematical Literacy with Annotation and Recitation (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Annual Meeting, October 27, 2023): Wonder why students can’t make sense of math problems? We will discuss specific strategies that our students use to work with texts and explain their thinking verbally. These annotation and recitation techniques help students decode language, build confidence, and strengthen their mathematical identities.
Where Do I Belong? (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Annual Meeting, October 27, 2023): Ignite talk.
Lesson Introductions that Improve Student Communication and Motivation (Association of Math Teachers of New York State (AMTNYS) Conference, November 11, 2023): Students learn best when they connect lessons to prior experiences and construct their own understanding. We will discuss how we use language-based teaching strategies (like peer editing and placemats) to strengthen students’ mathematical communication and improve their motivation.
Teaching Math as a Language: South Dakota STEM Ed Annual Conference, February 2024.
Nurturing Thriving Chinese American Male Identities in Mathematics (American Educational Research Association (AERA), April 13, 2024).
