I will be speaking at the following conferences during the 2026-27 school year:
Using Language-Learning Strategies with Desmos to Build Mathematical Understanding
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Annual Meeting, Denver, CO
8:00 AM, October 29, 2026, Session #14
Online platforms like Amplify Desmos do a great job of illustrating mathematical ideas. However, like people learning a new language, students often struggle to articulate what they saw and apply these ideas to unfamiliar contexts. We will share language learning strategies (such as concept attainment and note-taking) that we use in our classrooms. When used with Desmos, these strategies empower students to communicate more confidently so they can succeed mathematically.
Building Community and Creating Change by Elevating Student and Teacher Experiences
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Annual Meeting, Denver, CO
11:00 AM, October 29, 2026, Session #109
Classroom teachers are experts in student learning, but they are often marginalized in educational policy decisions. We will share lessons we learned from working with fellow math teachers in a supportive educator community in our area. Together, we increased their impact on the profession as they centered, analyzed, and publicized student and teacher experiences. In this session, participants will connect with each other and identify specific strategies for becoming educational changemakers.
Engaging Secondary Students in Notice and Wonder
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Annual Meeting, Denver, CO
4:30 PM, October 29, 2026, Session #255
In this session, we’ll explore the power of Notice and Wonder using resources from NCTM Classroom Resources. We’ll start with a quick look at how to access these materials, then focus on practical ways to use Notice and Wonder to engage middle and high school students in meaningful mathematical thinking. Participants will experience sample prompts and learn strategies for facilitating discussions, building routines, and using simple props to spark curiosity and deepen understanding. Walk away with ready-to-use ideas for bringing Notice and Wonder into your classroom. Note: This session focuses on using Notice and Wonder in the classroom with NCTM resources.
Using Language-Learning Strategies and Desmos
Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State (AMTNYS) Annual Conference, Albany, NY
8:00 AM, Saturday, November 7, 2026
Like people learning a new language, students often struggle to articulate ideas and apply them to unfamiliar contexts. We will share language-learning strategies (such as concept attainment and note-taking) that we use in our classrooms. Fostering Community and Change by Elevating Student and Teacher Experiences
Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State (AMTNYS) Annual Conference, Albany, NY
3:45 PM, Friday, November 6, 2026
Classroom teachers are experts in student learning, but they are often marginalized in educational policy decisions. We will share lessons we learned from working with fellow math teachers in a supportive educator community to analyze and publicize student and teacher experiences. Participants will connect with each other and identify specific strategies for becoming educational changemakers.
Using Language-Learning Strategies and Desmos
Association of Teachers of Mathematics of New York City (ATMNYC) Annual Meeting, New York, NY
Saturday, November 21, 2026
When students use Desmos, they often struggle to articulate what they see. We will discuss how language-learning strategies like concept attainment can be used with Desmos to help students communicate more confidently and succeed mathematically.
