Here is my schedule for speaking at conferences in 2025-26.
- Film Screening and Discussion: Counted Out (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Annual Meeting, Atlanta, GA, October 16, 2025): Join award-winning filmmaker Vicki Abeles (Race to Nowhere, Beyond Measure) for a special screening of her newest documentary, Counted Out—a compelling exploration of the power math holds in shaping our future. Through vivid storytelling, expert voices, and real classroom scenes, Counted Out calls on us to reimagine math education as a gateway to belonging, agency, and possibility. Presented in alignment with NCTM’s 2025 Annual Meeting—celebrating the evolving impact of mathematics in our communities—this screening offers a timely, thought-provoking lens on how math connects to power, equity, and the future we’re building together. A conversation with the filmmaker and educators (including) follows the screening.
- Incorporating Equity Tasks into Everyday Math Instruction (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Annual Meeting, Atlanta, GA, October 17, 2025): This session describes equity tasks, short activities that incorporate four student goals that relate to equity—rigor, identity, diversity, and justice. Unlike large projects, equity tasks can be as simple as homework or a warm-up assignment and focus on only one or two components of equity. We also discuss our rubric for evaluating equity tasks and examples of equity tasks from our website (mathequitytask.com) that can be embedded into our teaching.
- Engaging Secondary Students in Notice and Wonder (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Annual Meeting, Atlanta, GA, October 17, 2025): In this presentation, we’ll explore the power of Notice and Wonder, a teaching strategy that boosts student engagement, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. We’ll discover how to use this approach to encourage middle and high school students to think deeply about math concepts, foster curiosity, and build confidence. We’ll also examine practical ways to implement Notice and Wonder in the secondary classroom, including routines, props, and sample lessons. By the end of this presentation, you’ll be equipped to bring Notice and Wonder into your own classroom, helping students develop a deeper understanding of math and a lifelong love of learning.
- Boosting Confidence with Equity Tasks and Identity Questions (Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State Conference, Rochester, NY, November 7, 2025): Students who believe they can do math are more academically successful. In this session, we will discuss a set of “identity questions” that students can answer at the beginning of class over several months about themselves, their achievements, future plans, and feelings about math. We will also talk about “equity tasks,” short activities that incorporate four student goals that relate to equity – rigor, identity, diversity, and justice. We will discuss examples of student work and methods for incorporating these strategies into everyday instruction.
- Align Your Instruction with the Next Gen Standards: Learn What Students Really Need to Know (Association of Teachers of Mathematics of New York City, New York, NY, November 22, 2025): How do you align instruction with the Next Generation standards? We discuss how to use NYSED’s Performance Level Descriptions (which list specific tasks for standards), how they’re used to write state assessments, and how teachers can get involved.
