Today, the DebateMath podcast (hosted by Chris Luzniak and Rob Baier) released its latest episode, “Is NCTM worth it?”, featuring me and three other panelists.
In the episode, we debated whether membership in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics was worthwhile. The other panelists (Desiree Harrison, Sunil Singh, and Steve Phelps) and I agreed that NCTM needs to adapt to the changing landscape in math education. We also recognized the importance of community among math educators (something I spoke about in my Ignite! talk at the 2023 NCTM Annual Meeting in Washington, DC). We disagreed on where teachers could best find that community. I argued that despite its flaws, NCTM is the only organization that can represent all math educators. I concluded by arguing that NCTM should be an organization that builds community among math educators – NCTM should be the National Community of Teachers of Mathematics.
