In a DebateMath podcast released today, I joined four other panelists to discuss ways that we can help students feel like they belong in their math classes.
This panel, moderated by Chris Luzniak and Rob Baier, also featured Melissa Dean, Liesl McConchie, Shelby Strong, and Crystal Watson.
In the podcast, I spoke about the importance of self-care for educators so that they feel that they belong in a math class:
“If we think that math is just something that we give to students, that’s it’s just knowledge that we pour into an empty vessel, then they’re not going to belong, they’ll feel like math is being imposed on them. If we feel that math is playful, something that can be built around community, then our approach to teaching math is going to be very different.”
